Description

Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) fall under the umbrella of behavioral therapy and have some common goals, but differ in their core philosophies and techniques. Understanding the differences in these modalities is important when creating and implementing play therapy interventions with a purpose. In this presentation, we’ll begin by reviewing the history of CBT and what is considered the “third wave” of CBT, ACT. We will explore the theoretical differences between these two modalities and focus on engaging participants in hands-on CBPT and ACT focused interventions in play therapy to integrate our understanding of how CBPT and ACT can intentionally be incorporated in the play therapy room.

Objectives

  1. Identify 3 theoretical differences between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

  2. Describe concepts from Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT) and how they present in a play therapy session.

  3. Describe concepts from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and how they present in a play therapy session.

  4. Identify 4-5 directive play therapy interventions utilizing CBPT and ACT concepts.

  5. Identify 3 mindfulness based play therapy techniques.
